A Review of "Smoke"
a new novel by Catherine McKenzie
Catherine McKenzie is the bestselling author of "Hidden," "Spin," "Forgotten," "Arranged," and "Spun." Her latest work, "Smoke," is set for release October 20, 2015. A fan of her previous work, I was fortunate enough to receive an ARC.
"Smoke" takes place in a small town somewhere in the North American west, presumed because of its peak and propensity for forest fires. Nelson is described as a clean, community-minded burg, but as real people and readers know, there is strife everywhere regardless of how bucolic home appears. Like many readers, I admit I was expecting an unusual premise for a single character. "Smoke" delivers like a nuanced gourmet meal; with multiple layers and some familiar flavors mingled with some surprises. The surprises unfold slowly but as beautifully as the descriptions of the setting. One of the main characters, Elizabeth, is educated, contemplative and courageous, yet her image of herself and her emotional decisions regarding her relationships, including her marriage, will have the reader wondering how her story will continue. What and who Elizabeth holds dear are evident, what she does about them creates a parallel suspense in the story, along with the source of danger for the town. Mindy, another strong character in the story, could be your own neighbor or friend. A well-meaning citizen and a protective mother, she is another example of a complex woman who questions herself and her worth. For both women, the conflict and danger in the story will reveal what is true and what is important. Readers will recognize and appreciate how complicated even the everyday motions of life really are, especially since the story touches on raising teenagers, navigating troubled relationships and how even people we think are good can make poor decisions. A subplot about an elderly man who becomes homeless illustrates the grey area of good person/poor decision.
Well crafted story, lovely descriptions and developed characters you will come to care for add up to an extremely satisfying read.
